Red Flag #1: One-Legged Stance Test
The results of a one-legged stance tests may help predict brain health and risk of stroke. Researchers have found that the inability to balance on one leg for longer than 20 seconds may be associated with cerebral small vessel disease, when arteries become less flexible and can interfere with blood flow.
Red Flag # 2: Bloodshot Eyes
Bloodshot eyes can be a sign that you are developing arthritis, a chronic inflammatory disease that typically affects the small joints in your hands and feet. In this situation, the inflammation spreads throughout the body, including the whites of your eyes.
Red Flag #3: Losing the Sense of Smell
Being unable to sense certain smells could be a sign of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease or another neurodegenerative disorder. These diseases lead to death of brain cells over time. As cells die, brain functions start to decline. The sense of smell is one of these functions lost early on and shows that something larger may be wrong with the way the brain is working. Doctors may be able to do a sniff test to determine if your sense of smell isn’t working the way it should.
